Dear Parkside Community,
This weekend’s news from Israel leaves us deeply saddened by the horrific violence that has already left many hundreds dead and thousands injured. The shocking attacks, which began exactly 50 years after the start of the Yom Kippur War in 1973, occurred simultaneously with the holiday Simchat Torah, a celebration that marks the completion of the annual reading of the Torah.
We are devastated by these events. As we continue to watch the violence unfold, we want families and staff impacted to know that you are very much in our hearts and minds. When our students come to school tomorrow, know that there will be a safe space for them to process their feelings and share their fears.
It is important that each of us monitor our own reactions and exposure to media as the news continues to unfold. Children look to us for guidance and signs of safety in times of threat. As you have conversations at home, remember to stress that there are many people trying to help make things better and safer on both sides of the conflict. Take time to talk about the values that are important to your family. The National Center for Child Traumatic Stress has some helpful suggestions about how to talk to children about war. You can view this excellent resource here.
If you need to come talk to us, for support or just to voice your pain during this difficult moment in history, we are here for you.
